The Ulupono Initiative invests in organizations and companies working to reduce the amount of waste generated and dumped in Hawaii. For example:
Re-use Hawai’i is a non-profit, deconstruction organization dedicated to reusing and recycling commercial and residential building materials. Its mission is to keep reusable building material out of the waste stream, and in use in the local community. Re-use Hawaii’s team performs full “roof to foundation” and partial deconstructions, and sells the salvaged lumber, wiring, glass and other materials in its Honolulu warehouse. An enormous amount of energy is consumed in the harvest, production, transportation, and distribution of new material.
